The punishment for rape in Bihar’s Banka district, it seems, is entirely borne by the victim. At a 'panchayat', a raped woman was publicly made to lick the spit of her husband, who had instantly pronounced talaq when she told him of the crime committed on her. The rapist, meanwhile, was let off by the clergy with a fine of Rs 15,000 after he refused to marry the victim. The police said they were unaware of the incident. In a case that has strong shades of the infamous Imrana rape, the young rape victim of this Muslim-dominated village, has been running from pillar to post, seeking justice and security. The woman’s husband Mohammad Farooq of Rahmandih village pronounced talaq three times the moment she confided in him that she was raped by one Mohammad Ajaz on August 28. The Muslim clergies of both the villages concurred with Farooq’s decision. "Unhone mujhe bhari panchayat mein thook chaatne ko kaha, lekin aisa karne par bhee unko daya nahin aayee (My husband made me publicly lick his spit, but that too didn’t evoke any mercy)," the victim told TOI. The panchayat asked Farooq to return the amount of mehar — Rs 35,000 — to her and imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on Ajaz. "A paltry sum of Rs 15,000 for ruining my dignity and my married life," she rued. Villagers of Padhyar and Rahmandih said the village panchayat, headed by mukhiya Alamgir Ansari, had in fact ordered Ajaz to marry the woman after he confessed. "However, Ajaz and his father did not agree to the marriage and, instead, are learnt to have deposited the fine," said Mohammad Sagir, a villager. The victim has filed a case in the court of chief judicial magistrate and the court has directed the Dhoraiya police station to lodge an FIR against Ajaz and his father. The police however, are yet to respond. In fact, Dhoraiya PS officer-in-charge Bansidhar Jha feigned ignorance about "any such incident" or court order.
Dont worry,we will read this in the papers, shake our heads and expout words of wisdom and then go on with our lives.Me included.Ignorance,is truly blissfull.
